In health care facilities, such as patient rooms, isolation rooms or operating rooms, airborne viruses and bacteria can be a threat to both patients and health care givers alike. It is vitally important to be able to control or eliminate these contaminants through the effective design of the ventilation system in these facilities.

Recognizing its importance, ASHRAE recently dedicated a Standard specifically for such facilities. In particular, ANSI/ASHRAE/ASHE Standard 170-2008, Ventilation of Health Care Facilities, defines ventilation system design requirements that provide environmental control for comfort, as well as infection and odor control.
