INTRODUCTION AFM 2002 is the fourth international conference in the successful series on ‘Advances in Fluid Mechanics’. The objective of the meeting is to provide a forum for the interchange of new ideas and the presentation of the latest work in the field. The conference has been motivated by the success of previous conferences and the well-established Book Series Advances in Fluid Mechanics, the Editorial Board of which serves as the Scientific Advisory Committee for the conference. The aim is to provide a mechanism for discussing new work, which will afterwards appear in future volumes. The conference covers a wide range of topics, with emphasis on new applications and to research currently in progress. The basic mathematical formulations of fluid mechanics and their computer modelling will be discussed, as well as the relationship between experimental and analytical results. The first conference in this series took place in New Orleans, USA (1996) followed by Udine, Italy (1998) and Montreal, Canada (2000). WHO SHOULD ATTEND AFM 2002 will be of interest to scientists and engineers interested in presenting and discussing the latest developments in theoretical and computational fluid mechanics. The conference book is distributed at Registration. • Your research work will be publicised internationally. LOCATION Ghent is the capital of East Flanders and a city of medieval beauty. Situated at the confluence of the rivers Lys and Scheldt; the name of the town is derived from the Celtic ganda, meaning a confluence or estuary. Medieval Ghent developed in the shade of the impressive Castle of the Counts and is bordered by Flanders’ two most powerful abbeys, St Bavo’s and St Peter’s. It is at St Bavo’s that the famous painting ‘The Adoration of the Mystic Lamb’ (1432), painted by Hubert and Jan van Eyck can be viewed. CONFERENCE VENUE The conference will be held at the Cultural Centre of the Ghent University ‘Het PAND’, a former Dominican monastery, located in the historical center of the city, on the banks of the river Leie. The oldest part of this impressive building dates from the 13th century. During five centuries it has been extended and refashioned in different styles. ‘Het PAND’ houses some valuable collections, such as rich ethnographical and archeological collections of the University; the Museum for the History of Medicine; full size photographs of paintings of Bruegel and Early Netherlandish Masters, and an interesting collection of stained glass. CALL FOR PAPERS Papers are invited on the topics outlined and others falling within the scope of the meeting. Abstracts of no more than 300 words should be submitted to the Conference Secretariat *as soon as possible.* Abstracts should clearly state the purpose, results and conclusions of the work to be described in the final paper. Final acceptance will be based on the full-length paper, which if accepted, must be presented at the conference. Each submitted paper is subject to a separate registration.
