Description: |
This Special Course will provide a review of various scientific and industrial aspects of solid rocket propulsion and
of recent advances with emphasis on internal aerodynamics, for tactical rockets and large boosters for launch
vehicles. Military rockets are subjected to combustion instabilities while vortex shedding drives instabilities in large
boosters. Both instabilities will be presented, as well as classical stability assessment methods, propellant
characteristics and response, and aluminum deposit. Considerations on how to adapt the launcher to a changing
market should lead to significant breakthroughs in rocket technology, mainly for the purpose of reducing costs and
improving performance characteristics. Advanced numerical developments and recent solutions to reduce the
instabilities for the next generation of launchers will be presented. (RTO AVT/VKI Special Course).
