Description: | |
Introduction The purpose of the lecture series is to provide an introduction to the fundamental physical principles of turbulence and of its modeling, and to make a critical survey of the models currently available and of their domain of utilization. The lecture series starts with a presentation of the theoretical background of these topics. Emphasis is given to those models that can be considered sufficiently mature for a range of applications of practical interest, including compressible flows. Eddy viscosity models and full Reynolds stress closures are reviewed in detail; Large Eddy and Direct Numerical Simulations of turbulent flow are also addressed. The course aims at a state-of-the-art review and indicates the current research directions. Because of its nature and contents, it is valuable for both researchers and engineers interested in acquiring a fundamental knowledge of the problems and options in the domain of turbulence modeling in view of its application to their specific field of interest. The Directors of this lecture series are Professors Carlo Benocci and Jeroen van Beeck of the von Karman Institute.
