Description: |
The course starts with an overview on the complex flow field encountered in compressors:
3D dimensional, highly unsteady if not unstable, including secondary flows, tip leakage
vortices and sometimes shock waves. Particular emphasis will be put on periodic unsteady
phenomena as well as on surge and stall.
The use of computational fluid dynamics to describe such complex flows will be
the subject of specific lectures. Then, design techniques will be presented that
allow to control the diffusion along the airfoil and optimize its performance by
using geometrical parameters like lean, dihedral, etc. The last talks will focus
on the potential to use passive means (casing treatments) or active means to
improve the performance and the stability of compressors. Lecturers will share
both experimental and numerical evidences.
