Ph.D. Positions in Computational Modeling of Plasma Physics and Gas Dynamics About this position: The Computational Gas Dynamics and Plasma Physics Lab in the Department of Mechanical Engineering (https://engineering.und.edu/academics/mechanical/) at the University of North Dakota is looking for applications for funded Ph.D. positions with a start date of Spring 2025/Fall 2025. Current research includes numerical modeling of high temperature plasma physics in fusion applications, low temperature plasma physics in space applications, and high temperature gas dynamics in aerospace applications. The successful candidate will carry out computational research in the above mentioned areas using both continuum and kinetic theory methods coupled with high performance computing. They will have the opportunity to participate in existing and be encouraged to pursue new collaborative research. Qualifications: The ideal candidate should have earned a B.S. and M.S. degree in Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Materials Engineering, Applied Mathematics, Chemistry, Physics, or a closely related field. Preferred qualifications include: • Strong background in fluid dynamics or plasma physics • Strong background in computational science and engineering, including computational fluid dynamics, statistics, and numerical methods. • Strong programming ability in C++, Python, or other object-oriented programming languages. • Experience developing numerical methods and computer code. • Experience with high performance computing.
