TitlePost Doctoral Position in High-Speed Wall Modeled LES
CategoryPostDoc Position
EmployerUniversity of Maryland (near Washington DC)
LocationUnited States, MD, College Park
InternationalYes, international applications are welcome
Closure DateThursday, May 01, 2025
Description:
To come up with optimal high-speed vehicle designs it is of utmost importance to have a clear understanding of the relevant flow physics
and how they are affected by a wide range of parameters, including the external environment, the vehicle shape and the flight trajectory.
Key challenges for high-speed flow prediction are the laminar/transition flow region that is typically more substantial than for low speed
vehicles as well as the compressibility effects and high heat transfer rates for turbulent flows. It is well-established that current RANS
approaches lack the ability to accurately predict heat transfer rates at high-speed flow conditions. The current research effort aims to
improve the ability of current simulation methods to accurately and efficiently predict the flow field around high-speed vehicles by
developing advanced wall-modeled large eddy simulation (WMLES) capabilities. WMLES provides a promising alternative for improved skin
friction and heat flux prediction capabilities, especially, for complex flow scenarios involving transition, shock boundary layer
interaction and separation but the full potential for high-speed flows has not yet been fully demonstrated.

The post-doctoral student will be part of a large research team at the University of Maryland and advised by Prof. Christoph Brehm and
co-advised by Prof. Johan Larsson. Profs. Brehm and Larsson research groups collaborating through several research projects concerned
with improving wall modeled large eddy simulation capabilities for a wide range of applications.

Qualifications:
- PhD in aerospace/mechanical engineering, applied mathematics, physics or related fields.
- Proficient with C++ programming.
- Must be comfortable with numerical methods development, turbulence, turbulence modeling, and high performance computing.

Salary range:
- $70,000-80,000
- health benefits provided

Location:
- The University of Maryland, College Park, is close to Washington DC with direct metro connection.
