Elmer is a finite element software package for multiphysical problems licenced under GPL. The core of Elmer is the finite element solver - ElmerSolver - which includes modern numerical methods and a wide selection of different physical models. Additionally Elmer includes a graphical user interface (ElmerFront), visualization tool (ElmerPost) and a simple mesh creation and manipulation utility (ElmerGrid). Also other tools may be used for pre- and postprocessing. Elmer is maintained and developed by CSC, the Finnish IT Center for Science.
For fluid flow ElmerSolver uses a stabilized (SUPG or residual free bubbles) Navier-Stokes equation. Currently Elmer is best suited for incompressible laminar flows, possibly with a coupling to thermal, electrostatic, magnetostatic or structural phenomena. Also free surface phenomena may be accounted for.
